From the Oil Painter's Journal:
Ferry to the Vineyard
This scene is just down the road from the one in the Traffic Obstacle posting. On that day there was a strong wind from the south and a haze in the air. I used a palette knife for most of the painting (12" x 18") and even though there is a roughness to the way the ocean and the beach grass is painted I hesitate to finesse it, as I normally would, because it captures the feeling of the day with the sun rising late in the morning in October. It has the "ring of truth" about it and that's always what I'm always after. Not photo-realism but capturing qualities of nature honestly. Just as I was wrapping up the ferry to the Vineyard headed into the sunlight and I had a few moments to brush it in.
