Portrait Painting
Doug Rugh is available to paint portraits of adults, children and animals. Finished compositions may be of a head and shoulders or a full-size full-length subject. More than one person can be included in the painting and plain backgrounds, interiors or other locations can be used as a backdrop. The artist will be happy to discuss any questions you may have about portrait sittings and framing and will help you decide on all aspects of a formal or casual portrait. The artist is included in the Copley Society registry of portrait artists.

Studio Sittings/Travel
If the subject is available for sittings they can take place in the studio, on Cape Cod. The artist is also available for travel to your location.

Head and Shoulders
Framing is provided. The portrait is slightly smaller than life size and prices are for plain or simple backgrounds. The artist will be happy to give you a quote for more complex backgrounds or interiors or other locations used as backdrops. It is also possible to have two portraits painted side-by-side.
Standard individual size is 20" x 16" (approx. 27" x 23" framed.)
Standard double portrait size is 18" x 24" (approx. 25" x 31" framed.)
Process
The artist will schedule a two-hour painting session either in the studio or at the desired location. In the following weeks the artist will work from reference photos back in the studios. A second two-hour session will allow the artist to bring the portrait near to completion and then once back again in the studio the artist will apply the final glazes and frame the painting.

Painting time, from start to frame, will take between one and two months depending on the availability of models.

Three-Quarter Length, Sitting or Standing & Full Length Figure
Portraits may be painted in any dimension besides the standard sizes listed which represent the range from small to large. Please contact the artist for a quote.
Standard three-quarter length sizes range from 30" x 24" - 48" x 36".
Standard full-length sizes range from 36" x 24" - 84" x 48" for an individual and 36" x 30" - 84" x 60" for a double portrait.
Process
Once the painting format is chosen Doug will take photographs in a short session either in the studio or a chosen environment. A composite or layout will then be made from the photographs for approval and then a painting session of about two hours will be arranged with the model in which the artist will create a small color working sketch of the head (which is also available framed for $900.) and hands (if needed). The artist will return to the studio with the sketch and the photographs to paint the portrait. If the subject is available for additional sittings the artist will then be able to enhance and add finishing touches to the final painting directly from the model.

Painting time, from start to frame, can vary between one and six months depending on size and complexity and availability of models.

Oil Portrait by Doug Rugh
Childrens' Portraits in Profile
If children are old enough to sit for twenty minutes at a time in the studio they are positioned so that they can look out the window and are then painted in profile. That way they can move a little but it's still possible to get a likeness. If two seperate children's portraits are done as a set the profiles can face each other. After two or three sessions (with breaks) reference photos are taken so the painting can be fnished up over the next few weeks in the studio. The oil painting canvas size is 14" x 11" and comes with a gold frame for $900. These portraits are family heirlooms where the child remembers sitting for the artist in the studio (just south of the Bourne Bridge on Cape Cod.)

Posthumous or Unavailable Models
Surprise gift portraits or posthumous portraits may be done from provided photographs but painting size will be limited to the level of detail in the photograph.
