Painting with Two Colors

This exists for nothing more than indulging the eye but the beauty of form can be profound. The set up is simple: warm and cool light play across a patterned white cloth -- one of my favorite surfaces to paint. The hot spotlight from the right shines behind the matte pattern on the planes where the cloth turns toward the light and the pattern reverses on the table top where cool light reflects off the bowl. That blue window light from the left is revealed, also, in the dark violet shadow edges as folds turn towards and away from the light . Warm light shimmering off the cloth warms and brightens the shadows which are sometimes soft and sometimes distinct. Call it sfumato or ciaroscuro. I call it creamy.
