From the Oil Painter's Journal:

Rose Colored Glasses

When I set out looking for a composition I ask myself where I'd like to be at that particular time of day. On this late afternoon I found myself on Lawrence Island in a windbreaker soaking in the last warmth of the setting sun. I knew I'd have to work fast because the scene in front of me would be different every few minutes.

The trick is to time it so that the panel is mostly blocked in just as conditions are ideal. Then, I adjust all the tints with just a few passes of the brush. But no matter how well I capture it I've got to rework the painting when I get back to the studio. It's a cruel trick that's played on sunset painters. The first time (and it happened several times before I realized I was powerless against it) was under a particularly pink sky and I was ecstatic because not only was it a beautiful sight but I got it just right -- the pink light, the brilliant blue shadows. I lost my glow back in the studio when I looked at my colorless panel. The pink light of the setting sun no longer tinting my drab colors.
